Battery Backup

Backup Power for Your Home

Although battery backup is not a requirement for having a solar system, it can ensure that  your home or business has a continuous supply of electricity even during power outages.

Understanding The Basics

NET Metering

To understand the benefits of having a battery backup for your solar system you must first understand what NET metering is and how it works. NET metering is a program that allows homeowners to tie their solar systems to the power grid and receive credits for any excess electricity that they produce. During the day their solar system produces excess electricity that is sent to the power grid and which they receive credits for. At night when the solar system is not producing electricity, the house uses those credits to pull electricity from the power grid to power the home. However, one issue with the NET metering program is that homes with solar systems will not have power when the electric grid is down and the sun is not out.

Battery Backup

When a homeowner installs a battery system with their solar system it ensures that their home or business has a continuous supply of electricity during power outages even when there is no sunlight. During the day, any excess electricity that the solar system produces will be sent to the battery system so that it can be used during the night time. Battery systems also give homeowners additional insight into their electricity production and consumption.

Things to Consider When Choosing Backup Storage

  • Capacity: You need to choose a backup storage system that is sufficient for your energy needs. This will depend on the size of your solar system and your energy usage patterns.
  • Technology: There are several types of backup storage systems available, such as lithium-ion batteries, lead-acid batteries, and flow batteries. You should research each type and choose the one that best suits your needs.
  • Durability: Backup storage systems can be expensive, so you want to make sure you choose one that is reliable and long-lasting.
  • Compatibility: Your backup storage system should be compatible with your existing solar system components and inverters.
  • Battery vs Generator: Another option for backup power is installing a generator for your home. Depending on your electric consumption & geographic location it might be worth considering installing a gas generator for backup power as it can sometimes be more feasible.
